Following up on last week’s note about feedback, I thought that it was important to take a look at some of the components of communication. Communications is both verbal and non-verbal and it’s broken down in the following way:

Verbal – 45%
Words – 7%
Tone and Volume – 38%

Non-Verbal – 55%
This includes body language, facial expressions, breathing, movement, etc.

So while what we say is important, how we say it is just as important, if not more. If we want to get our ideas across, avoid misunderstandings and make better connections, then we need to understand how verbal and non-verbal communications work together to form a complete interaction.
